Sensible Kitty Job Hunting Post #2: Where to look
I’m on day 2 of looking for a job.
So – where do people in Asheville go to look for jobs? Here’s a starter list of places:
1.) Your Network: This is the best place to look for a job – your friends, former coworkers, etc. They can keep you in mind when they come across or hear about job postings. My Twitter network was especially helpful in getting out the word that I’m looking for a job.
2.) Places you want to work – Contact companies or businesses that you respect, see if they have any openings, ask them to keep you in mind for future positions.
3.) Colleges – In Asheville, we have several local colleges. These colleges have career postings for their students AND job postings for the colleges, too.
4.) Mountain Xpress
5.) Craigslist – Occasionally you can find legitimate offers on CraigsList. Beware scams, though. Also, everyone checks CraigsList first when looking for a job and that means you will have a lot of competition.
6.) Indeed: If you use Emurse to post your resume, it matches up your keywords with keywords in job postings! Brilllliant.
Happy Hunting!
Aporkalypse Now
Swine flu isn’t a laughing matter but the word Aporkalypse kind of is.
And it looks like these kids were the first to use the hashtag :#Aporkalypse
(that’s me + Josh Benson, by the way.)

Sensible Kitty Job Hunting Series
In this economy, on thing on everyone’s mind is their job. Lately, I’ve had scores of friends seeking advice on how to go from unemployed to employed. It’s a tough market – so you have to get a little creative. I’m going to do a series of posts on job hunting – let me know what you’d like for me to write about and if these resources are helpful. Here are some proposed topics:
1. Online Resources
2. Offline Resources
3. Volunteering
4. Networking
5. Resumes
6. Nailing the Interview
Anything else?
Love Letters
Recently, a co-worker commented on that fact that I was wearing two different colored socks. I explained to her that, Yes, I realized they were different and its one of those little things I do for myself in the morning, like a Love Letter to myself.
At the end of the day – when I’m tired, cranky, happy, zen or blah I take off my shoes, see two slightly different colored socks on my little feet and I always smile and laugh. It’s nice to think about doing a little something to brighten up my day.
Another thing I do is schedule text messages (using the 37 signals to-do list service Backpack) with little tidbits of inspiration to randomly appear in my phone. You can schedule them for months in advance and sometimes they really make a difference in how my day goes.
Do you have any small actions that are Love Letters to yourself? I’d like to do more of them.
WPVM
Head over to the WPVM blog for the latest on whats up with the radio station. I’m staying out of it – but watching to see if I can be of help in some way.
