Green Per Diem: Urban Re:Vision
One of Sensible City’s clients, Urban Re:Vision, just scored a stellar article in the Utne Reader. Here’s an excerpt:
Imagine a city where renewable energy is generated by helium-filled “solar balloons” floating hundreds of feet above the rooftops. Imagine a city where public transportation doesn’t follow regular routes, but is efficiently directed on demand, via cell phone and GPS technology. A city where walls and fences are replaced with structures, such as shared kitchen gardens or child care centers, that bring neighbors together. A city where commercial systems are designed to generate social capital as well as cold hard cash.
It sounds pie-in-the-sky, but the folks at Urban Re:Vision think that asking people to reimagine the way urban spaces are designed is the key to finding real-world solutions that make city life healthier, for humans and for the environment. The San Francisco organization is using a series of design competitions to solicit new ideas, both viable and futuristic, for overhauling specific components of city living: energy, transportation, construction, commercial and community systems. Green Per Diem: Potting Shed Creations
For Christmas 2007 I received a really amazing gift – although at the time I didn’t know how truly amazing it would be. Ms. Amber of Lu ‘n Am fame, gave me a small, shiny bag filled with soil and seed. And from the bag would sprout a tiny beautiful flower. The kit is made by Potting Shed Creations and they specialize in painting your thumb green for you because the kit is impossible to mess up. So after the initial success – I purchased more!
Right now we’re growing Thai Peppers, Tomatoes, Basil, Chives and Oregano. All on our windowsill! It is the perfect way to start a mini garden in a mini apartment. It is so easy to grow a little bit of your own fresh herbs or vegetables. I’m hoping to try the bigger rice hull trees in the future. And one day hope to have an actual garden, of course!
